Mujinga Kambundji won her first European title in the 60m.
Muijinga Kambundji finally obtained the Euro Indoors 60m gold medal. The Swiss sprinter, who won only one bronze medal in her three previous European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2015, 2017 and 2019, equalled the championship record with 7.00 and became the gold-medallist in Istanbul. This was also the second consecutive gold medal for Switzerland in women’s 60m, with Ajla Del Ponte bagging the first one in 2021. Ewa Swoboda, who equalled her season best with 7.09, won her second silver medal after 2017. Daryll Neita came in third with 7.12.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who came to his title defense in Istanbul with only one race prior to European Athletics Indoor Championships, improved the 18-year-old championship record of Ivan Heshko (3:36.70) by 3.25 minutes to 3:33.95. The 22-year-old Norwegian extended his medal tally in European Championships to 10 medals in total. Neil Gourley, who came in Istanbul in very good shape, obtained his first continental medal by clocking 3:34.23. Azeddine Habz of France won bronze with a time of 3:35.39.
Hanna Klein, who is the 1500m bronze medallist of Torun 2021, ran a personal best time of 8:35.67 and staved off fellow countrywoman Konstanze Klasterholfen for the gold medal in women’s 3000m. Klein also became the first German to win the Euro Indoors 3000m title since Brigitte Kraus in 1994. Klosterhalfen, who came in second with 8:36.50 won another silver medal after her first one in Glasgow four years ago. Melissa Courtney-Bryant won the bronze medal with 8:41.59 and kept on the tradition of British athletes stepping on women’s 3000m podium in every European Athletics Indoor Championships since 2017.
